At The Northwest School, grades six through eight constitute a community within the larger community. Teachers meet the unique developmental needs of early adolescent children by providing a rich, balanced educational program in a supportive environment. Through small classes, diverse approaches to learning and an emphasis on hands-on exploration, students develop the commitment and skills to be self-directed learners. The academic programs is interdiciplinary when appropriate, and close communication and collaboration among teachers ensure the integrity of the program at each grade. Intellecutal, social and physical development are stressed equally. After three years in the Middle School, our students have learned skills to help them take on the more demanding personal and academic challenges found in the Upper School.
Our Students continue to develop their intellectual and personal independence. They pursue a challenging and well-balance program of studies, working closely with the faculty relationships that stimulate academic and artisitc creativity. In addition, students participate in athletic, outdoors and community service programs and have access to state-of-the-art technology. The development of personal responsiblity and leadership skills is an important piece of the four-year sequence. By the time students are seniors, they lead cross-graded teams that are responsible for maintaining the school building and grounds, mentor younger students and organize all-school events. We believe that students who have been truly engaged by a community of scholars, artists and peers will graduate from high school with eyes open, eager to participate in society and expecting to make a difference.
