Douglas County occupies 860 square miles of space between Colorado's two main economic Centers: Denver and Colorado Springs. Lying along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains the county affords beautiful mountain views, easy urban access and diverse recreational opportunities. The county features a mix of rural and suburban areas, town centers (Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Parker) and large plots of open space including ranches, greenbelts, public parks and national forest lands.
Douglas County School District maintains its position as a "lighthouse" district with many innovative programs and educational approaches. Support and coordination can be found at the district level, but each school has the flexibility to build its own instructional programs. The district's elementary schools emphasize a mastery of the basics while incorporating time for art, music and physical education. Formal computer instruction begins in the elementary grades and continues from there.
Douglas County School District is one of the fastest growing in the nation, with a growth rate of between 6 and 7 percent every year. Enrollment for the 2002-2003 school year exceeds 38,000 students, more than doubling the number of students enrolled in the district in 1992. Douglas County is the fourth largest school district in the Denver Metro area.
