District Mission: (purpose of the organization)
The mission of the Fife School District is to provide a safe and caring environment which ensures that all students will learn.
District Vision: (futuristic view)
We will ensure that all students learn in a supportive educational community by providing dynamic, challenging curriculum and innovative, effective instruction.
Fife School District is located east of the City of Tacoma in the Puyallup valley. The district is about ten square miles in area and falls in both Pierce and King Counties in Washington State. The district includes three cities Ė Fife, Milton, and Edgewood. The district also includes the unincorporated areas of Trout Lake, Jovita, and Fife Heights. A portion of the Port of Tacoma is included in the district. There is easy access to the district from the Fife/Milton exit #137 off Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Seattle. The drive to Tacoma is about 10 minutes, to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport about 30 minutes, and to Seattle about 45 minutes.
Due to its attractive location and extensive single and multiple dwelling units, many residents live in the district but work in surrounding communities, towns, and cities. There is a large suburban community, a smaller but important rural element, and a growing commercial center. The district hosts a wide variety of restaurants, shopping areas, small businesses, and larger commercial enterprises. The small and mid-sized farms in the Fife area produce flowers and outstanding crops of cauliflower, cucumbers, lettuce, cabbage, corn, and other vegetables/berries for major fresh and package markets.
The district has had a continuously improving assessed valuation during the past few years as a result of commercial growth and industrial expansion. The ideal location of the district near Interstate 5 and old US 99, and the inclusion of a portion of the Port of Tacoma in the districtís boundaries, contribute to this growth. The districtís total assessed valuation in 2002 will be close to 1.76 billion dollars. The patrons of the district approved a four-year maintenance and operations levy in February of 2002 with a 65.58% yes vote. This is indicative of the community support for our district.
Within the last ten years the district has built a new primary and a new elementary school, remodelled the intermediate, middle, high, and alternative schools, and has updated the support facilitie (bus/maintenance and administration building). In February 2000 the patrons of the district approved a $35,000,000 bond for the construction of Alice V. Hedden Elementary School that opened in September 2001, and a new junior high school that will open in the fall of 2003.
The district continues to make the success of each individual student its highest priority. Selection of quality staff is an integral part of this success.
