CTE - Pharmacy Technician Teacher

General Definition and Conditions of Work:
The instructor performs professional work providing instruction in pharmacy technology. The instructor is responsible for an instructional program that prepares students as certified pharmacy technicians. Work is performed in classroom and lab settings.
Work is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks:
Plans, oversees, and implements the Pharmacy Technician program and instructs students in the methods, techniques, and processes of the pharmacy and health care field;
Performs and teaches students pharmacy technology and related skills including, but not limited to, the study of pharmacy occupations, communication in a pharmacy, pharmacy calculations, safety procedures, and prescription and over-the-counter drugs;
Provides elementary skill training in assisting the pharmacist in serving patients, maintaining medication and inventory control systems, and administration and maintenance of pharmacy practice;
Oversees students’ internship experiences in licensed pharmacies and other health care facilities (if applicable);
Provides competency-based instruction in accordance with state curriculum/task analysis guides that are subject to adaptation by the local school system;
Manages the learning environment, implements instructional objectives, provides for individual student differences, and assesses student achievement;
Teaches concepts, skills, and attitudes that will enable students to be employed or to continue their study in an advanced training program or an institution of higher learning;
Teaches the tasks, tools, and equipment used to achieve course competencies as defined by the Virginia Department of Education and reviewed by the local industry advisory committee;
Meets with the local occupational or craft committee to ensure appropriate competencies;
Maintains an effective student evaluation system;
Keeps appropriate competency records, daily plans, and attendance;
Advises the Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA);
Establishes and maintains business and community contacts;
Seeks opportunities for students to participate in work-based learning;
Prepares program budget including selecting equipment, materials and supplies and assures it reflects the desire to make the latest technology available to students;
Provides for equipment upkeep and maintains records of equipment and consumable materials; and
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abiltites:
The instructor should possess thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching and competency-based education; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; the ability to prepare oral presentations and written reports; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, and parents.
Education and Experience:
The instructor must be a board-registered Pharmacy Technician and have successfully passed the Virginia Pharmacy Technician Exam or the ExCPT exam. The instructor should possess two years of experience in the field.
Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), and/or a certificate(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
