Checotah Public Schools is a rural K-12 school district in Checotah, Oklahoma. The 282 square-mile area that comprises Checotah Public Schools is unique in that it is one of the largest school districts area-wide in Oklahoma. Checotah Public Schools serves more than 1,470 students in the elementary, intermediate, middle school, high school, and alternative school buildings.
Thanks to a supportive community, the district passed a bond issue in 2004 that is rapidly coming to fulfillment. New roofs and air conditioners have been added to the Intermediate School, athletic locker rooms, and Marshall Elementary. A new building that will contain five new classrooms and a science lab was completed to begin the 2006-2007 school year. The addition of this new building houses eighth grade classes. The sixth grade students moved into the junior high building that has allowed much needed classroom space in the elementary building for all-day kindergarten.
Academic advancements are also taking place at Checotah High School. Advanced placement classes in history, English, and chemistry have been added that will allow high school students to take state-wide tests for college credit. A new web design class has also been added that gives students real-world experience using the newest software available to create web sites.
Checotah Public Schools also received a new technology grant of $100,000 in February 2006 that will provide Smart Boards and distance learning capabilities for many students
