SALARY and BENEFITS: Grade 17. Range begins with Step 1 = $12.57 per hour. 6.00 hours per day, 181 days per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience. The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

NOTE: This position begins the 2018-2019 school year.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent. A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in basic instructional techniques, or a closely related field; and entry-level experience performing the work of a Para Professional within a regular classroom setting; or experience at or equivalent to experience as a Para Professional I for the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below. Must have an Associate’s Degree or completion of two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (verified by official transcript) or pass the state-approved academic proficiency test (Para Professional Assessment). All applicants must meet all highly qualified requirements pursuant to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations. Bilingual preferred.

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen test.

This is a replacement position.

General Job Description:

Under supervision, to assist teachers in classroom operations; to instruct regularly placed students individually and in small groups; to instruct ELL and special education students having moderate disabilities; working with students that may require special programs that are not yet diagnosed; attend appropriate work related trainings; and to perform clerical duties and related work as required.

Experience or training required:

Knowledge of: Familiarity with the specified language; a language other than English; principles of adolescent development; general reading and computation skills; physical growth and development; office machines and procedures; basic record keeping techniques; power tools (may be required); basic first aid.



Ability to: Assists students to learn a variety of physical moves and mental skills or concepts; assists students to understand school environment; read, write, speak and translate a designated second language of average difficulty with accuracy; operate a typewriter and computer with accuracy; perform routine clerical work; maintain routine records accurately; perform first aid, as needed; read, understand and apply moderately difficult materials; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.



Any combination of training, education, and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in an English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) program or similar program, or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above. Must have an Associates Degree or completion of two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (verified by official transcript) or pass the state-approved academic proficiency test (Para Professional Assessment). Must meet all highly qualified requirements pursuant to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations and pass mandated bilingual testing requirements.

Licenses or Certificates required:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card. Possession of a current first aid certificate may be required.

The Job Functions:
Positions in this class perform duties that are specialized to a particular program or where special skills are needed. This class is distinguished from the para professional series by the districtwide application of duties or duties within one school that are multi-disciplinary or duties that require a special background. Position involves interpreting and translating oral and written material and information from one language to another. No one incumbent is expected to perform all of the duties described herein, and the examples of duties include those performed by more than one incumbent.

Essential Job Functions:
Translates and interprets information in various subject areas for teachers and English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) students and parents; reinforce instruction given by English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) teachers and regular classroom teachers using a variety of activities; monitor and evaluate student progress; communicate with teachers regarding student progress; may plan, administer, and collect test data including pre/post testing; corrects test; maintain and update student files and records; provide resource assistance as needed; administers first aid; duplicates materials; reads assignments and explains material to students; discusses student disabilities with teachers and implements special learning programs; understands secondary level subject matter to assist special students in learning; completes requisitions; may provide oral translations and interpretations for Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.’s), psychological, health, and speech evaluations and accommodations for special education students; helps maintain Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) folders; operates various office machines; may operate various power machines in woodworking, auto shop, and machine shop (may be required); interprets and translates for students and parents speaking a non-English language; instructs students in speaking English; arranges for immunization and other requirements to be accomplished; discusses with parents the progress of students; operates either personal or District vehicles in the course of work; and performs related work as required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Strength: Medium Work - Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
