Detroit Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position(s):

In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Reports to: Principal (or Designee)

- Candidates must possess and provide evidence of a minimum of a Master's Degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
- Candidates must possess and provide evidence of a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Counselor License issued by the State of Michigan Department of Education.
- Applicants must have completed a minimum of 18 semester hours of graduate course work in an Accredited School Counseling Program (documentation must be submitted at time of application)

- Completion of a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) mandated clock hour internship with school-aged pupils under the supervision of a person who is a counselor educator in an approved school counseling program. At least half of the mandated clock hours shall be in a school setting
- Examination: Michigan Test for Teacher Certification—Guidance Counselor Section
- Institution Recommendation is required for K-12 Certification
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Prevention (CPI) Certified Preferred.
- Candidates may be requested to demonstrate writing proficiency

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Principal (or Designee), the School Counselor will:

- Administer Pre/Post Needs Assessments to students, parents and staff. Assist the administrator with high school testing; including exit exams; PSAT, SAT, and Work-Keys.
- Provide professional guidance and counseling services that assist in creating a learning environment that contributes directly to student mastery;
- Concentrate on the academic achievement, career development, personal-social effectiveness and psychological maturity of students while facilitating professional tasks and transitions;
- Assist students with the understanding of the MI Six Career Pathways and the completion of the Education Development Plan (EDP) Grades 7-12;
- Work as a liaison between Turning Point Academy and the Local Education Agency. Intake coordinator for all incoming and exiting students.
- Coordinate guidance activities with other school staff personnel, business/labor industry, community foundations/organizations and other local resources;
- Consult with teachers, parents, administrators, and others about the School Counseling Program and other educational-related activities, procedures and participating in team meetings and Individual Educational Plan;
- Participate in data aggregation and interpretation with students, parents, staff and counselor colleagues;
- Participate in webinars, site training programs, professional conferences/workshops and other professional growth experiences;
- Serve on the School Improvement Team, Positive Behavior Intervention Support Team, and participate in other Professional Learning Communities;
- Work with clerical to obtain all student records including transcripts. Ensure all transcripts are accurate and up-to-date.
- Organize and facilitate end of the school year graduation/promotion programs.
