HARFORD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS – A GOOD SCHOOL SYSTEM REACHING FOR GREATNESS
The Harford County Public School System is one of the fastest growing in the state and one of its most successful. With the seventh largest school enrollment in Maryland, Harford County has seen its student population increase by more than 10,000 in the past 15 years to 40,313, a growth in excess of 33 percent.
The enrollment increase has been fueled by a booming residential development in Harford County. Located along the I-95 corridor midway between the Baltimore and Wilmington/Philadelphia metropolitan centers, Harford County's moderate tax structure, access to transportation, and progressive government has been attractive to business and commercial development as well.
The system has built and opened ten new schools in the past 15 years. Three other schools have had significant expansions, and several have been modernized. The ninth new school - the rebuilt Forest Hill Elementary - was opened in September 2000. One of the county's older high schools, Aberdeen, occupies a state-of-the-art replacement building which opened at the start of the 2004-05 school year. As part of the school, a Science/Math Academy with an ultimate capacity of 200 students is included as a third of the new Aberdeen High School. Students from all over the county are invited to apply for and attend the magnet program. Three other older high schools in the county are due for modernization/replacement projects in the near future.
There are more than 2,700 teachers in the Harford County Public School System and about 1,500 support personnel serving the children of the district. Recent staff improvements have brought an art teacher to every elementary school, full-time assistant principals to most elementary buildings, all-day guidance services to many of those schools, and enrichment teachers providing services to every elementary school in the county.
