The city of Marlborough, with a population of 35,000, is centrally located in Massachusetts at the west suburban intersection of Interstates 495 and 290. Boston, Providence and Worcester are all less than an hour away by car. Marlborough is home to a growing and vibrant economy, and recent years have brought a sharp increase in computer, high technology, and financial services businesses. The well-maintained shops of Main Street, rolling hills, numerous small lakes and parkland are features of a drive through the City.
The Marlborough Public Schools serve approximately 4,800 students and are comprised of an Early Childhood Center, three elementary schools (K-3), one intermediate elementary school (4-5), one middle school and a high school. A comprehensive program is offered to all students with a full sense of respect for both personal and cultural diversity. The schools are home to programs for Gifted and Talented, Special Education, and English Language Learners. Eight advanced placement courses are offered at the high school including the Syracuse University "Project Advance" English. Approximately 90% of high school graduates continue with further education immediately after graduation.
A five-year technology plan has led to three major computer lab acquisitions for all levels of the school system, and the high school is one of five in the state to host the Virtual High School, a major federal matching grant project in distance learning. Marlborough has been exploring ways to diversify its professional staff to mirror the growing diversity of the student population. The Cultural Network Center and The Carlisle Foundation (through its 5-year Marlborough Project) are two agencies that have worked closely with the school system to foster a sense of growth through an appreciation of diversity. Marlborough schools offer a welcoming environment for learners of all ages.
