We are proud of our school system and are confident that the educational opportunities that we provide our students are excellent. Our teachers, administrators and staff are caring dedicated professionals, who strive to provide instructional experiences in an environment dedicated to meeting each child's individual needs. A testament to our efforts is the fact that we rank 29th out of 68 school districts in Louisiana in regards to student achievement, and a review of recent data indicates that we will move higher in the ranking.
Our system is composed of ten schools. We have five elementary schools; Port Allen Elementary (Pre K-1), Cohn Elementary (2-4), Chamberlin Elementary (Pre K-3), Brusly Elementary (Pre K -2), and Lukeville Upper Elementary (3-5). We have three middle schools; Port Allen Middle (5-8), Devall Middle (4-8), and Brusly Middle (6-8), and two high schools; Port Allen High (9-12) and Brusly High (9-12). For the 2005-06 school year we served 3350 students in August, moved to 3900 at mid-semester as a result of Katrina and Rita, and are presently stabilized at 3475 students. Links are available on our website that will enable you to view the report cards for each of our schools.
Our most recent LEAP and GEE test scores (released in May 2006) showed increases in student achievement in many areas, particularly math and English/Language Arts. Our administrators, teachers and students are focused on teaching and learning with a strong emphasis on the core areas of communication, both written and verbal, reading, problem solving, social studies and science. The ability to think and resolve problems lends itself to all phases of the educational process, and to life, in general. While we have strong emphasis on the basic disciplines, we recognize and nurture the whole child, and provide access to other areas of the curriculum to enable each student to recognize and develop his/her special talents.
The entire instructional program in our district is continually evolving to meet the challenges of today's society, and, as such, technology is woven throughout the curriculum and the system as a whole. We will continue to enhance our use of technology, and are confident that it will be a driving force as our system moves forward.
The governing body of our district is the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board, which is comprised of ten individuals who are dedicated to providing strong, progressive and responsible leadership. Each Board Member values our community, and knows and recognizes that the quality of life in our parish is directly proportional to the quality of education attained by our youth. Because of this basic philosophy, members of our Board are all clear thinkers and work for the long-term benefits that a school system brings to its community. Each Board Member brings unique strengths to the table, and collectively, they serve as an excellent group of policy makers for our citizens.
Our quality educators and support staff are totally dedicated to the welfare of our children. If you are a West Baton Rouge resident, then you know that the "west side is the best side." If you are considering a move to our parish as a resident or an employee, we welcome you. Rest assured that your move will be positive!
