The Kashunamiut School District is made up of one school with approximately 330 students.
The district is located in the heart of Chevak which is on the north bank of the river called Ninglikfak. It is about 17 miles east of Hooper Bay. The estimated population is around 750-850 people.
Chevak is known as "New Chevak" because the residents inhabited another village site called Chevak before the 1950ís. The Old Chevak was abandoned because of the flooding from high storm tides. The new site of Chevak was reported by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1948.
Chevak is an eskimo village in which commercial herring and subsistence activities are an important part of the culture.
The Kashunamiut School District provides for education for the students. The current school population is around 330 school children. The new school building is scheduled to be constructed during the summer of 2001 and will take about a year and a half year to complete.
